Hands Off Our Taxmen Bob Gives Video Update

Yesterday Bob was joined in Parliament by Derby City Council leader Chris Williamson, director of Marketing Derby John Forkin, and representatives from Derby and Derbyshire Economic Partnership, the council, businesses, the Evening Telegraph and the Public and Commercial Services Union. The reason for the delegation was straightforward - to present the business case for keeping the tax offices open in Derby to senior officials from the HMRC.
Bob Said: 'I think that the campaign is going well so far. I was impressed with the presentations made to the HMRC and we definately made our views very clear to Don Makepiece and his team from HMRC. I think that the whole delegation is united in its opinion that the figures don't really add up. We understand that the HMRC have to make savings but this does not mean that such a drastic measure of shutting down all offices in Derby should be the result. The HMRC repeatedly emphasised that no decision has been made yet and that they would consider Derby's case. While we were never going to get HMRC to pledge to save the offices at the meeting, all we could do was put the financial case forward, as well as make them plainly aware of the sentiments that exist towards any proposed closure'.
Don Makepiece from HMRC, who is overseeing the consultation said:
"We take full account of the economic impact on Derby. There are a lot of jobs and we've listened to what you've said.

"This is a genuine consultation. We put together our proposals and sought feedback. In other areas we've done this, we've made changes following that feedback."

David Gillon, who is leading the regional review programme for HMRC, said that he had been impressed by the case put forward by the HOOT campaign.

"It's the most professional case we've had put to us by a city so far as part of this consultation," he said. "Derby has certainly made an impression."
