Bob Calls on Parliament to Recognise Rolls Royce

Bob Laxton today tabled an Early Day Motion to congratulate Rolls Royce on achieving billions of dollars worth of orders at the recent Paris Airshow.

By securing sizeable orders from the likes of Qatar Airlines and US Airways for their Trent Engines, Rolls Royce have secured thousands of jobs, not just in Derby but at companies nationwide.

EDM 1752 is as follows:  ‘That this house congratulates Rolls Royce PLC’s Civil Aviation division in Derby for securing record orders worth more the billion dollars for their Trent Engine Series at the recent Paris Airshow; notes that Rolls Royce is a important player in the national economy and its continued success creates and guarantees thousands of jobs at Rolls Royce and in other suppliers and companies nationwide; further notes that Rolls Royce should receive commendation for their continued development of more fuel efficient engines that have managed to cut emissions with each new engine design helping to reduce environmental impact.’

Bob Laxton Said “I am absolutely delighted that Rolls Royce have secured around billion dollars worth of orders. I have made regular visits over the years and I have seen them go from strength to strength. They have worked tirelessly on improving their engines, making them quieter, more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly with each new design.”

“Their achievement at the Paris Airshow has meant that thousands of jobs will be secured both in Derby and nationwide. They are such an important part of the local and national economy that I thought it was important to recognise their contribution in Parliament and I am sure that MPs will want to join me in  support of the company. However, I also want to use the motion to urge the Government to do more to help companies like Rolls Royce. If Rolls Royce keeps expanding they will need a new generation of innovators and designers. So to make sure they have the best people to choose from we need investment to encourage more people to study qualifications like science and engineering. In addition, we also need the Government to support the manufacturing sector so companies have the best possible chance to compete in a rapidly changing global market.”
